Professor Charles K. Kao, our former Vice-Chancellor and founder of Engineering Faculty of CUHK, has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for his "groundbreaking achievements concerning the transmission of light in fibres for optical communication". A party in celebration of Professor Kao's achievement was held in CUHK on Oct 7. The details could be found here.
Professor Kenneth Young, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, quoted the response of Professor Charles Kao towards receiving the Nobel prize as below:
“I am absolutely speechless and never expected such an honour. The Nobel has never been given out for applied sciences before. This is very very unexpected. Fiber Optics has changed the world of information so much in these last forty years. It certainly is due to the fiber optical networks that the news has travelled so fast.”

CUHK’s Groundbreaking Discovery in Semiconducting Nanowires Advances Nanotechnology
2009-07-20 [ view ]
Research team led by Prof. Xu Jianbin of the Electronic Engineering Department and Prof. Li Quan of the Physics Department revealed for the first time intrinsic ferromagnetic characteristics in semiconducting nanowires in a study published in the current online edition of an internationally-renowned journal, Nature Nanotechnology. The breakthrough is an important step forward in the development of diluted magnetic semiconductors for electronics applications. It opens up a new front in semiconductor physics and nanotechnology, and holds promise to take the development of computer technology to new heights with faster computing speed and larger data storage capacity, but less power consumption.
