Engineering Professors named 2012 IEEE Fellows

Prof. Thierry Blu and Prof. Liew Soung-Chang of the Faculty of Engineering have been elected Fellows of the prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2012 for their extraordinary accomplishments in scientific research. This brings the total number of IEEE fellows in CUHK to 28, the highest among all institutions in Hong Kong. Prof. Blu from the Department of Electronic Engineering was named IEEE Fellow for his fundamental contributions to approximation theory in signal and image processing. Prof. Liew from the Department of Information Engineering was recognized by IEEE for his contributions to wireless communications and networking. Engineering Professor awarded Outstanding Achievement Award

Prof. Wang Jun of the Department of Mechanical & Automation Engineering recently reaped the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Asia Pacific Neural Network Assembly at the 18th International Conference on Neural Information Processing held in Shanghai, becoming the second in Hong Kong being awarded to notable achievement. Prof. Wang also received an IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks Outstanding Paper Award with one of his graduate students....

CUHK Undergraduate Students Win Gold Medal at iGEM Asia

A genetic engineering team formed by undergraduate students of Engineering and Science Faculties recently won a gold medal at the iGEM (international Genetic Engineered Machine) Asia Regional Jamboree. The team also won the Best BioBrick Measurement Approach and the Best New BioBrick Part (Natural) awards and were qualified to participate in the world championship of the iGEM Jamboree to be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in November, competing with over 50 teams from around the world. The Radiofrequency Radiation Research Laboratory Received International Laboratory Accreditation

The Radiofrequency Radiation Research Laboratory (R3L) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong recently received the ISO/IEC17025 Certificate of Accreditation under Hong Kong Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (HOKLAS) and becomes the only one in Hong Kong and one of few in the world ISO/IEC accredited laboratories for mobile station Over The Air (OTA) performance, mobile phone Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) test and passive antenna measurement and calibration. Engineering Professor awarded the Medal of Honour

Professor Wong Kam Fai, Associate Dean of Engineering (External Affairs), has been awarded the Medal of Honour (M.H.) for his valuable contribution to the development of Information and Communications Technology. The 2011 Honours List was published in the Government Gazette on July 1. This is the 14th full Honours List since the reunification. The awards presentation ceremony is tentatively scheduled in October 2011. Hearty congratulations to Professor Wong!...

Engineering Professors won the IEEE Marconi Prize Paper Award in Wireless Communications

Prof. Angela Zhang, Prof. Jianwei Huang and their student Liping Qian from the Department of Information Engineering, won the 2011 IEEE Marconi Prize Paper award in Wireless Communications. The awarded paper titled "MAPEL: Achieving Global Optimality for a Non-Convex Wireless Power Control Problem”. It is an annual best paper award of IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and only one paper will be awarded each year. This year, the eligibility window was extended to three years, meaning that the competition was among all papers published in TWireless over the last three years. Professor Helen Meng and her research team from the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management won the Best Oral Paper Award at the Annual Summit and Conference of The Asia-Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association (APSIPA2010). The paper, entitled "Development of Automatic Speech Recognition and Synthesis Technologies to Support Chinese Learners of English -- The CUHK Experience", presents the recent achievements in computer-aided pronunciation training made by the team. The list of authors include: Helen Meng, Wai-Kit Lo, Alissa Harrison, Pauline Lee, Ka-Ho Wong, Wai-Kim Leung and Fanbo Meng. APSIPA aims to be one of the most competitive conferences covering the area of signal processing, information technology, and communications.
